With Gmail, there are usually one of a few reasons for a failed username/password:
1. Many people use two factor authentication. If you do, please make sure you set up an app specific password in Gmail and then use that password in MailDroid. You can find details here
2. Gmail has started to use oAuth2 as a more secure approach for username/password. MailDroid supports oAuth2 tokens as long as that Gmail account is set up on your device already in the Gmail app. Simply remove the account and add it again and you will see a token option
3. If you don’t want to set it up again as oAuth2, you can tell Gmail to be OK with the “old” security format by following this article

Following up on my emails, I’m still having big problems with Gmail SMTP. It now rejects all sends. I’ve tried all permutations of login methods – OAuth2 and username/password, username with and without @gmail.com appended, etc. – still the same Google error that SMTP login failed.

When entering server settings the validation step always succeeds – does this validate SMTP?

My Google account is configured to “allow less-secure apps”, which my desktop Thunderbird requires (doesn’t support OAuth2), and Thunderbird never has any problem sending. Even if Google doesn’t like multiple apps, why does it never complain about Tbird but refuses to allow MD?

I’ve run Google’s UnlockCapthca page endless times and that doesn’t help. I think this is worse since 4.07.

Does anyone else have this kind of problem with Gmail? Can anything be done? I’m now in the position of having to fire up the Gmail app if I want to send any emails on the phone 🙁

Finally resolved! Something must have been well screwed-up 🙁

Having tried yet another phone re-boot to no avail, I had the opportunity to install MD on a Nexus 7 tablet. I copied over the saved settings from my phone and all was fine.

So I un-installed and re-installed MD on the phone, imported the settings on first launch, and presto – no problem sending, all works fine as before. Maybe clear-data would have been enough, didn’t try that. Will never know how it got in that state, odd one.

Still not dismissing notifications though 🙁
