Network down/time out

I have had this problem for a while. I have 2 Galaxy 7 Edges on Verizon and 1 S8+ on T-Mobile. They all exhibit the same behavior and it doesn’t matter whether I have the phones connected to wifi or not. Also, this is not only happening with Maildroid but any email app. So I know its not maildroid’s problem but I am hoping someone here would have some idea.

Maildroid is set to check for email every 10 minutes. Sometimes it does but most times it doesn’t. If I check, there is a message displayed at the bottom “Network down”. Other apps display “Syncing disable” or similar.

It may finally sync in a few minutes or an hour or more but if I manually check, the app retrieves the email no problem.

The app is on the never put to sleep list and the phones are on high performance mode. No idea where to check next. I believe the problems started with Nougat. Any ideas?
