Hi there,
Due to a problem on my android-4.4.2-phone, I had to do a factory reset. Beforehand I saved the entire phone (internal memory and sd-card) to a hard disc on a computer. Due to the problem I couldn’t do a backup using adb or a backup app.
When reinstalling maildroid, I could successfully import all my settings (accounts, rules, signatures, etc). However, the mails sent from the phone were gone. I had checked “store sent mails on device” and yet, I haven’t set up specific folders for “inbox”,”sent”, “outgoing”, etc. for the accounts.
I have tried and copied all maildroid related folders from my previous installation from my backup to the device, but the mails sent from the device still wouldn’t show up.
Hence the question: In which folder/subfolder are the mails sent from the phone are being stored? Is there a chance to bring them back?Curious about a solution, Andreas
By the way: fantastic app!!!

Have a look at /data/data/com.maildroid.pro/files/{content,attachment}. There I could find my sent mail as separate files and attachments, respectively. I’m not sure though whether restoring those two folders bring back your sent mail within Maildroid. But you might be able to extract the mails from there and re-import them into some IMAP folder using a desktop email program.

I just did more searching and it seems more tricky: My sent mails (and many more) are also stored in the SQLite Database located in /data/data/com.maildroid.pro/databases/database.db. In that database there is also a link to the files mentioned above, so just adding those files might not be enough, you would have to import a lot of entries from your old database to the new one.
You could try to just copy the database.db file (and the journal) over to your new installation. But you might as well break the whole Maildroid installation doing so. -

Alestrix,
thank you for your effort. First of all, I’m not using Maildroid Pro (which seems to be your version according to your paths). However, the files and the databases reside in according directories in the non-pro-version. I had copied the entire com.maildroid-folder from my backup into the new installation, but the mails sent from the device didn’t show up (the inbox did reappear).
The accounts I’m using are IMAP accounts, so the mails that are still in the backup are only those that came in on the phone after my latest fetching them with a POP-account on my computer. As mails sent from the device are not pushed toward the mail server, I would expect them to be stored in a local directory on the device they were sent from (in this case the phone).
I used your advice, renamed the files in the “files”-folder to *.html and could view them (easier than in an ascii-editor), they were all the inbox-mails but no sent-mails. I viewed the db-file as well, but it also didn’t contain any information on the sent mails.
I don’t know whether there’s a difference in the free- and the pro-version with regards to this issue, else I still haven’t found the proper folder.Regards, Andreas

I’m not the developer of this app, so I don’t know anything about the internals, but I’d be surprised if Maildroid and Maildroid Pro would behave differently in this respect.
I do not let Maildroid store the sent mails on the server either (I use an always-BCC preference in Maildroid plus a filter rule on the server to put sent mails into the sent folder to save on traffic) and IIRC I have not set the sent folder as offline folder in Maildroid. And yet I can see the emails sent from Maildroid in that database file (table “messages”), so my assumption was that these must be the “sent from this device” emails. Since I use Maildroid 99% for writing mails it’s hard for me to pinpoint a mail that was written with my desktop client and to analyse the differences.
I guess you’re out of luck here until a dev sheds some light on this. -
October 12, 2015 at 10:58 pm #590
Correct, there is no real difference in internals between ad and pro, other than the folder name (com.maildroid vs com.maildroid.pro) that is created. In general, the folder stores bits of data and there is other data stored in an internal database so we split the data and headers out. We do this for security, faster searching of headers, and faster loading in certain cases. Due to this, just restoring the folders won’t get the headers which were wiped out during your reset. Basically, the com.maildroid folder may have the body of some emails, but there is no header to associate it to anything as that is stored in the db. This is why it is not shown.

Thanks to both of you for the enlightenment. Assuming that joelangley is the developer, I understand your explanation in principle, still I didn’t quite find an answer to my question. According to your explanation, the header part of the sent mail resides in a database, which is invisibly integrated in the core app (but then where is the apk-file?)?
It will not break my neck not to be able to restore the sent mails, even though it would have been nice and was one of the reasons for me to do the backup before doing the factory reset. However, which is the proper solution to avoid data loss in the future? Is it Alestrix’ proposal to BCC the sent mails? -
October 14, 2015 at 3:13 pm #600
The apk file is essentially just an zipped app and when installed it creates files, folders and some databases that are tied to it. This would be no different (technically) than installing an .exe on a windows machine. When you uninstall an application on your Windows PC, all files are normally removed, same here…everything gets wiped.
You asked what is the best solution for retaining data here? The BCC option is a good option, but not for IMAP. For IMAP, you really should map your folders under menu, settings, folders. In this section you can set the draft, spam, sent, and trash folder. This way everything is in-sync with your server. When you send mail from MD, it syncs to the server into that folder and when you start a draft in MD, it syncs to the server in your draft folder so you can update it later on a PC if you wish.
Hope this makes sense 😉

I dare to (partially) disagree about Maildroid syncing sent mails to the respective IMAP folder. While this is probably the easiest way to set up and also works well for small emails, it often caused me nerves (due to waiting) or problems (due to broken connections) when sending large emails “from the road”.
While in the latter case Maildroid might retry putting the mail into the sentmail folder when connectivity is restored, there is a time frame when your mailbox is in an inconsistent state (i.e. mail was – possibly – sent but is not stored in the sentmail folder).
Plus it takes up double the data. If connection is unstable it might even use up multiple of that.
That’s why for me the BCC + server-side-rule is the preferred solution. -
