My experience with this bug is that it has something to do with the mishandling of messages moved to/from the SPAM folder by the anti-spam plugin.
Very often the unread message count of both INBOX and SPAM folders is incorrect, but in the same amount…positive and negative. Shows up that way both originally, and then when moving (a) false positive from SPAM back to INBOX, and (b) missed positive from INBOX to SPAM. These moves add and subtract unread message counts from both folders in unison, but the counts are simply incorrect to begin with and adding or subtracting 1 sill shows them incorrectly.
For example, here’s a screenshot right now. My INBOX actually has ZERO read/unread messages in it (i.e. it is completely empty). And my SPAM folder also has ZERO read/unread messages in it (i.e. it, too, is completely empty). So the (1) and (-1) unread message counts in both folders is obviously completely wrong.
